In my opinion, poverty is without doubt the greatest problem in the world, and this is true both logically and physically. Logically, poverty is defined as the lack of money and possessions. If we consider this problem directly, it might not seem to be a very big problem, but it is actually the cause of many, many other problems. Without money, families wouldn't be able to afford basic needs such as food, clothes, and shelter. Without enough food, people get health problems like malnutrition and also get infected by diseases. Lack of money further causes the lack of education. Children who couldn't go to school would either have to take their parents' jobs or have no job at all, and this keeps the poor people poor. Without proper education, people wouldn't also be aware of things such as the their basic rights, how their country and other countries work, human trafficking, and some ways to prevent diseases such as HIV/AIDS. When the majority of people in a country is poor, the government would be poor, and that creates more problems. With the lack of police officials and proper knowledge, the society becomes very unstable. People might rob, kill, rape, take drugs, or even become slaves. Without enough money, the government would also not be able to build public infrastructures such as schools, hospitals, road, electricity supply, and water supply. When the citizens know little of the existence of their government, the government can also become very corrupted. A corrupted or weak government frequently leads to civil wars, and many times a side of these wars would be supported by some of the richer countries, which would many times make these wars more complicated and widespread. War is a very direct and big problem. In wars, many soldiers and citizens die. If they don't, they are frequently injured or deported to other places. Child soldiers are also common in the wars. On the other hand, most developed countries with lower poverty rates don't have these problems. People get their basic needs, and the government have enough money for public infrastructures. There are also no wars because people are generally satisfied with their lives. A few problems that developed countries might face would be overpopulation of old-aged people, obesity, and the increase in demand of resources. The increase in demand of resources cannot be considered as a great problem because there are no obvious facts against the people yet. Indeed, many resources in poorer countries were taken, but that would also partly be because that the country is underdeveloped. In addition, many developed countries have technology that help decrease the demand of the resources. Physically, poverty is the greatest problem because of the number of people involved in it. There are 842 million people who don't have enough to eat. (Know Your World: Facts About Hunger and Poverty) Over 3 billion people, which is nearly half the world population, earn less than $2.5 a day.
